Vera B. Williams


    

Childhood

  • Vera B. Williams was born on January 28, 1927 in Hollywood, California.
  • She grew up in New York City.
  • When she was ten, one of her paintings was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art.
  • She did not like school but loved to draw.
  • She went to the High School of Music and Art in NYC.
  • She graduated from Black Mountain College in 1949.
  • She studied graphic art.

Adult

  • She married Paul Williams.
  • She has three children named Sara, Jenny, and Merce.
  • In 1970, she got divorced and moved to Canada.
  • She has taught art, cooking, writing and nature study.
  • She has lived on a houseboat on a bay in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada.
  • She has taken a 500 mile canoe trip on the Yukon River in Canada.
  • She now lives in New York City.

Writing Career

  • Her first book was published in 1978.
  • She has written and illustrated 13 books.
  • She also writes and draws for adults.
  • In 1983, she won the Caldecott Honor Award for her book, A Chair for My Mother.
  • In 1991, she won the Caldecott Honor Award for her book,  "More More More," Said the Baby.
